How to resolve error: Timeout performing lookup on [domain]

A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or the established connection failed because the connected host has failed to respond.

If you receive the error shown above when trying to send a message through Hurricane Server, follow the below steps.

  1. Go into the IP Address settings page of the Hurricane Server console. Make sure that you only have the outbound option checked for IP addresses that can access the internet. The localhost address and other internal IP's may not have access to your DNS server.
  2. Check the DNS server settings in the Hurricane Server console and try entering your DNS server(s) manually.
  3. Use 4.2.2.2 as the DNS server. This is a public DNS server that supports MX record lookups. If this address works for you, then there is a problem with the DNS server that you are using. It is possible that the server does not have MX record lookups enabled.
